John Gonzales, San Ildefonso Pueblo, received his bachelor of arts from Stanford University in 1980 and a master’s in city planning from M.I.T. In 1987 he was elected president of the National Congress of American Indians. In 1989 he accepted a position with the Bush administration as a consultant, working with Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan in establishing the National Indian Gaming Commission.
